Particularly its periods of prosperity in medieval and then in Georgian times when it was a coaching town on the Great North Road as well as having a sizeable brewing industry and being an important maltings centre. There is also a temporary display called 'The Archaeology of the Baldock Bypass' which finishes in May 2008. Several local history books are on sale in the museum including a history of the Iron Age and Roman Town that lies beneath the present town.
