A ruined Norman castle in a dramatic situation on the hill high above Castleton, built by William Peveril in the 11thC to protect the Peak Forest. There is a curtain wall with typical Norman 'herringbone' masonry almost complete and a small imposing keep, erected by Henry II. Immortalised by Sir Walter Scott in 'Peveril of the Peak'. It is recommended to wear sensible shoes, not smooth or leather-soled as there is a winding, steep climb, to the Keep. A newly erected walkway enables visitors to enter 2 previously inaccessible chambers.
