Derby Museum and Art Gallery holds collections and displays relating to the history, culture and natural environment of Derby and its region. There are internationally important collections of paintings by Joseph Wright of Derby - Associate of the Royal Academy (1734-97), and of Derby porcelain. Other galleries feature archaeology, local regimental history and natural sciences. There is a lively programme of changing exhibitions and an education service for schools.
The military gallery is due to be re-developed in 2007/2008 with the aid of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, in partnership with the 9th/12th Lancers, the Derbyshire Yeomanry, Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment and Derby City Council. The new gallery will be called Soldier’s Story. The old gallery will close on the 1 June 2007.
