Durham Castle was founded in about 1072, some six years after the Norman Conquest of England. Built as a Norman fortress, the Castle became the ceremonial home of the Prince Bishops of Durham, but since 1830s it has been the home of University College, the foundation college of the University of Durham.
The Castle is part of a World Heritage Site and is also a registered museum. Amongst its most interesting features are the Norman Chapel (1072), the Great Hall (1284), the Tudor Kitchens (1499) and the Black Stairs (1660s).
Students of University College live in the Castle during University terms, but during vacations the Castle is the venue for prestigious social events, weddings and banquets as well as offering simple bed and breakfast accommodation.
Entrance is by guided tour only. Dates and times vary due to University terms and commercial activities. Please call the Porters Lodge on 0191 334 3800 for daily tour information and times.
