Magnificently sited, overlooking Loch Ness. Urquhart is one of the largest castles in Scotland, with a long and colourful history, built in the 1230s, seized by the English in 1296, sacked by the MacDonald Lord of the Isles in 1545 and left to fall into decay after 1689. Most of the existing buildings date from the 14th century and include the Grant Tower (16th century) the best-preserved part of the complex.

Entrance to the visitor centre is by lift from the car park. The visitor centre contains retail, interpretation area, AV presentation and tearoom and toilets on one
level. Visitors with disabilities are normally asked on arrival about any help they may need. Both motorised and manual wheelchairs are available at the visitor centre. Due to the steep gradients we recommend assistance for those using wheelchairs or with limited mobility.

Stunning views of the loch can be obtained from visitor centre veranda.
