At The Ropewalk you will find a wide range of contemporary art and craft, including one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary ceramics in the region. The Ropewalk is host to a number of activities and events throughout the year, including the annual Insight Open Studios event.
Ropewalk Contemporary Art and Craft is a private enterprise run by The Waterside Artists' Cooporative. The Ropewalk is situated slightly to the east of the Humber Bridge, on the southern bank of the River Humber. Stretching out towards the bank, at almost a quarter of a mile long, The Ropewalk was initially part of a rope making factory; opening in 1767, the factory eventually closed in 1986.
The building houses four galleries, twelve artists' studios, a bespoke picture framing service, as well as a number of facilities for use by the general public, including meeting rooms, a dark room and printmaking studio.
Main Gallery
The Main Gallery houses a changing programme of contemporary art exhibitions, curated in-house, as well as National Touring Exhibitions from the Hayward Gallery.
Artspace
A new gallery and education space with a changing programme of exhibitions beginning October 2005.
Craft Gallery
The Ropewalk Craft Gallery houses a continually changing exhibition of quality craftwork from over 80 regionally and nationally acclaimed makers providing small gifts and collectors' items to buyers from around the country. These works, by new and established artists, include glassware, ceramics, textiles, sculpture, prints and an extensive collection of contemporory jewellery. We also have a wide range of original handmade cards and small gifts available to purchase. Prices vary to suit all budgets. The Craft Gallery has established a strong reputation since opening in April 2000 as a provider of one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary ceramics in the region. Craft Gallery Coordinator and former textile designer, Sally Ward, is on hand most days to offer her professional advice to collectors and buyers.
Box Gallery
A gallery within a gallery, an intimate space with a changing programme of themed exhibitions featuring the best in craft with nationally and internationally known makers.
Heritage Display
An exhibition portraying the industrial heritage of the waterside area of Barton upon Humber.
Workshops
We offer a wide range of recreational art and craft workshops for both adults and children.
