St Magnus Cathedral is a mainly 12th-13thC building, built by Earl Rognuald of Orkney in memory of his martyred uncle, Earl (Saint) Magnus, whose remains are interred in the building. The building is a good example of transitional style (Romanesque and early gothic) and has some fine polychrome stonework. It is still used as a church by a Church of Scotland congregation and is owned by the people of Orkney and maintained by the local authority.
