The first independent church was founded in Keld by the Reverend Edward Stillman in about 1791, among the ruins of an ancient chapel. The present building dates from 1861 and together with the manse, school and institute forms a pleasant cluster of 19th century stone buildings. Points of interest include box pews and the sundial above the door which is mentioned in Wainwright's 'Coast to Coast Walk'. The view from the churchyard is magnificent.
