The most southerly point of Scotland. A peninsula with prehistoric fortifications, bird sanctuary, lighthouse and visitor centre. The building which is now the visitor centre originally rehoused the workmen who built the lighthouse in 1828. The lighthouse, with its 26 metres high tower, still plays a major navigational role and its light, now electric, has the power of 1,700,000 candles. Guided tours of the lighthouse are available.
