Walking the Walls

Chester has the most complete city walls in Britain. Their history dates back to Roman times when the city was founded as the fortress of Deva.

The walls were refortified throughout Chester’s history and now offer an interesting and picturesque way to enjoy the many stunning views of the city.

For those wanting to explore the walls independently there are a number of interpretation plaques, which help to orientate you and highlight the fascinating history.

There is also a useful ‘walking the walls’ leaflet on sale at both the tourist information centre and at the Chester Visitor Centre – both within 2 minutes walk of an access point onto the walls.

The walls circuit is 3 km long and can be completed at a gentle stroll in an hour and a half.

For those wanting to explore the Water Tower and the King Charles Tower located along the walls, you can take a Secret Chester Tour that allows you a glimpse of parts of Chester other tours don’t go to. For details contact the Tourist Information Centre. The regular daily walking tours of the city also always include a walls section.
