One of York’s prettiest shopping streets, Stonegate, running in a straight line from the Minster to the river and once the home of the city's stonemasons, is known for its exclusive shops. The Shambles is a perfect medieval thoroughfare - flag stoned, incredibly narrow and lined with overhanging timber-framed houses. This was once the home of York’s butchers and you can still see the old meat hooks on one or two of the houses. The cobblestone streets brim with buskers, shoppers and street entertainment.
