Day-time in York

North Yorkshire pub

Yorkshire touring base

We recommend you take at least 3 days to enjoy the wealth of the city centre attractions, but there is yet more to discover on the city’s doorstep.

York is within easy striking distance of three National Parks including the stunning Yorkshire Dales made famous by James Herriot’s “All creatures great and small”. Visit the World of James Herriot in Thirsk. Explore the beautiful seaside towns of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey.

If you are into quaint picturesque market towns and markets, you’re close to Helmsley, Selby, Beverley, Harrogate and Knaresbrough.

York is surrounded by numerous English Heritage and National Trust properties including Pickering and Helmsley Castles, the stunning Fountain’s and Rievaulx Abbeys.

If historic houses are your passion, you will be spoilt for choice. TV classic Brideshead Revisited was filmed at Castle Howard. The Bishop of York’s residence Bishopthorpe Palace sits serenely on the River Ouse and you can reach the ancestoral home of Lord and Lady Feversham, Duncombe Park, and the fascinating Newby Hall and Sutton Park within a 30 minutes drive. At the nearby award-winning Harewood House, you can visit the home of Her Majesty the Queen’s cousin

Other highlights include the atmospheric Yorkshire Air Museum, the nostalgic World War II Eden Camp Museum, the breathtaking North York Moors Steam Railway and the National Trust gem Beningbrough Hall.
