Coggeshall - once an important place in the trade of wool and lace making is now an antiques centre. The town is full of shops, eating places, historic buildings, ley lines, witches and stories of the past. Why not join a guided walk and talk from a local historian that meanders through tight alleyways and old lanes where houses topple erratically onto the pavements. Visit two excellent National Trust properties in Grange Barn and the 16th-century wool merchant’s house Paycockes, admire the 15th-century Church of St Peter-ad-Vincula, and Victorian clock tower. If you still have the energy why not visit Marks Hall, an estate with over 100 acres of arboretum and eight miles of foot paths.
