Alwinton

Alwinton, a small, quaint village, is the gateway to the Cheviot Hills. Dating from the 13th century, the church, situated in a stunning setting on a steep hillside, is unusually designed to stand on two levels. There is a National Park car park in the village for those walking the fells. The valley continues past Alwinton for another 12 miles of single-track road, passing farmsteads Barrow Mill, Linbriggs, Shillmoor, Bygate, Barrow Burn, Blind Burn, Fulhope, Makendon and finally the Roman encampment of Chew Green, which is intersected by the Pennine Way. These are the Cheviot Hills, remote yet arguably the most magnificent untouched landscape in the country.
