Canterbury travel guide

Canterbury, in the South East of England, has been an important player in England's history since its early beginnings as a Roman settlement. Canterbury is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is also one of Britain’s Heritage Cities. Once one of the busiest places of worship in the medieval world, it’s now a leading, 21st century holiday destination - with a full range of luxury hotels, fine restaurants, great shopping, lively nightclubs and welcoming pubs.

“I loved Canterbury, the Cathedral is stunning, the castle has a fascinating history and the Abbey is very interesting. A day trip there is a must.”Anna, Brisbane

Culture & heritage

Canterbury was named one of Britain’s Heritage Cities due to its fascinating history and heritage. In 597 A.D. the Pope St Augustine came to Canterbury, to convert the region back to Christianity. In recognition of this, UNESCO granted World Heritage status to part of the city, including St Martin’s Church, St Augustine’s Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral, which date back to that period.

Shopping

Canterbury is a shopper’s paradise. On the historic streets of King’s Mile you can find a great selection of independent shops. Or hit the High Street to find a fantastic range of big name stores. And Whitefriars Shopping Centre is home to over 100 high street shops and restaurants.

Attractions

Canterbury’s breathtaking cathedral has to be first stop on your visit. This World Heritage Site is also the site of the martyrdom of Archbishop Thomas Becket, who was murdered here in 1170. And don’t miss the Canterbury Tales, where the sights, sounds and smells of Chaucer’s medieval England are recreated.

Sport

The St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury – home of Kent County Cricket Club – is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the country, and has been voted best cricket ground in the UK. Come and watch a game and you might even spot a well-known international on the grounds!

The city displays a colourful and global cuisine with long established Indian, Italian, Chinese, Thai and Spanish Restaurants.
