The landscape of the Kent Downs is special. There is drama and intimacy; there is remoteness, ancient places as well as the bright white of a new cliff fall. This is a landscape of outstanding quality and value with a real sense of place.
The drama comes from the south facing scarp slope and its fantastic views, and from the cliffs at Dover and Folkestone. The secluded dry valleys give a remote feel; the intimacy is to be found amongst the network of tiny, historic lanes and hedgerows. This is an area of chestnut coppice and ancient woodland, farmed landscapes and chalk pasture and orchards. It is a landscape of colour and wildlife, bluebell woods and banks of orchids, herbs and other wildflowers. Amongst this, nestle distinctive downland villages where you will find welcoming tearooms, shops and pubs serving local produce, including beer! A wealth of historic sites contribute to the strong sense of place in the Kent Downs. There are lively farmers markets, exciting and fascinating events and an extensive network of public rights of way to enable you to explore all corners of this special landscape.
