Abergavenny has a stunning backdrop - the mountains of Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and Blorenge mountain - and is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. There’s evidence of a Roman settlement in Abergavenny and the Castle. St Mary’s Priory Church dates back to the eleventh century and has an excellent collection of sculptures and monuments. It is one of the best Church collections in the UK.
The focal point is the Town and Market Hall, dating back to around 1807. Today the ground floor houses the indoor market and on Saturday the Town Hall’s car park has traders selling a variety of goods, from fruit and vegetables to arts and crafts.
The Annual Food Festival, held in September, is a celebration of the magnificent local produce. There are also masterclasses with world famous chefs, plenty of cookery demonstrations and tastings too!
Abergavenny is an ideal base for exploring the Brecon Beacons. There are many walking trails, including the Beacons Way and Offa’s Dyke Path, or a tranquil walk along the Brecon and Mounmouthshire Canal.
While you're in the area, take the scenic drive along the Gospel Pass and visit Llanthony Priory, a 12th century Priory founded by a Norman Knight who was captivated by the beauty of the area.
