Ready for a sporting event that's a little bit different?
With 2012 looming on the horizon, we in Britain can reflect on our great successes…….
Cheese rolling....
Bog snorkeling....
GRIM Duathlon is just such an event. Held on the Army’s vehicle testing tracks in Aldershot, Hampshire, the GRIM Duathlon offers the weekend warrior something a little bit different.
Competitors will need to complete the off-road adventure course on foot and on mountain bike. The race comprises of a 5k run, 20k mountain bike ride followed by another 5k run. This is no normal course though. You will encounter man-made moguls, a hill circuit, sandy paths, mud and waist high puddles. Race organiser and Commonwealth Games silver medallist, John Gladwin, also throws in some camouflage netting to crawl under for good measure.
John says, “The race is aimed at anyone who wants a different type of challenge on a weekend. You don’t need to be a serious cyclist or seasoned runner. It is a great race for beginners. I’m sure the guys at the front of the race will battle it out for honours but for the majority, this is just about finishing and having a good time”.
He adds, “The course is beautiful but challenging. The cammo nets will add something a little different to your run and the water will ensure that everyone will need to be dismount and carry they bikes through the puddles”.
The inaugural GRIM Duathlon will take place on October 18th and it follows in the footsteps of its famous sister race, the GRIM Challenge, an 8 mile off-road running race always held on over the first weekend in December at the same venue. Now in its seventh year, the GRIM Challenge attracts over 4,000 mad Brits over the Army’s terrain.
