British Culture

Tyne Bridge

You will find culture radiating across the country from world-class museums and galleries to majestic castles, stately homes and gardens not to mention Britain’s thriving theatre, opera, ballet and huge range of concerts and festivals.

If you are a theatre buff, you will be spoilt for choice in London’s world-renowned West End, with the latest musicals and plays.  Or, experience a Shakespearian play the way it was meant to be at the reconstructed Shakespeare’s Globe theatre.  And if you are a real fan, you can even take a pilgrimage to home of the legendary bard in Stratford Upon Avon.

Of course, there is so much more to British Culture than our history and past dignitaries, you can also see and experience cutting edge art, music or film.  To find out what an impact India has had culturally on the nation, spot the work of leading designers and architects dotting the skyline or relax in a park or garden. The great thing is there is something for you to enjoy and explore throughout the year.

Britain also hosts a fantastic range of all year round arts and music festivals and events including the world famous Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, the famous Edinburgh International Festival, celebrating music, opera, theatre and dance and this year is the world’s first international festival of original, new work at the Manchester International Festival. Or perhaps, get along to the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London to soak up the atmosphere and splendour of a must-see festival of classical music.

Explore Britain’s many free national museum and gallery collections in key cities such as Glasgow and Cardiff.  At the Tate Modern and British Museum in London you can discover some of the world’s most famous artworks and artefacts and catch one of the latest international blockbuster exhibitions, at no cost.

If you want to explore a popular cultural attraction then head north to the shores of the River Tyne in Gateshead. This is where you will find BALTIC - the biggest gallery of its kind in the world - presenting a dynamic, diverse and international programme of contemporary visual art.  Nothing ever remains the same at BALTIC so you can always be guaranteed a new experience each time you come back. If you want something a bit smaller but just as dramatic then make you way to Sir John Soane’s Museum in London. First built as a home to this once celebrated architect, it now provides a fascinating setting for his antiquities and his works of art, which continues to inspire visitors and designers.

Finally, 2008 sees Liverpool take on the mantle of European Capital of Culture - which means the city will be showing off all the new film, art, music and design that makes it such a cultural hotspot!
