The Other Boleyn Girl - Film Overview

King Henry VIII Portraits

The history of the British Royal family is full of drama, betrayal, jealousy and rivalry, and no one did this like the Tudors. The Other Boleyn Girl tells the story of Mary Boleyn, sister of Anne and mistress to King Henry VIII.

Based on the best-selling novel by Philippa Gregory, The Other Boleyn Girl is an enthralling and sensual tale of intrigue, romance and betrayal set against the background of one of the most defining moments in British royal history.

2 sisters, Mary (played by Scarlett Johansson) and Anne (Natalie Portman) are driven by their ambitious father to advance the family’s social status by courting the affections of King Henry VIII (Eric Bana). When Mary Boleyn comes to court as an innocent girl of 14, the King, who despairs that his wife Katherine of Aragon will ever produce a male heir, is quickly drawn to Mary’s youth and beauty. Mary soon falls in love with both the King and her role as unofficial queen.

But no woman can hold Henry’s interest for long, and although they share a passionate, lengthy affair and Mary gives him a healthy illegitimate son, Henry’s interest in Mary eventually wanes. She soon realizes just how much she is a pawn in her family's ambitious plots as they force her to step aside for her best friend and rival: her sister, Anne.

Mary’s love affair with the King is no obstacle for Anne, whose hunger for the throne overpowers her sisterly love, and she enacts a plan that eventually tears her family and her country apart while leading to her legendary demise.
