The Crown

The Crown is a very traditional and friendly pub with has a history that spans many centuries. Found on Cornmarket Street in the middle of Oxford the Crown had already been in existence for almost three centuries when it acquired its present name in 1625.

There was once a Crown Inn on the other side of Cornmarket Street, the difference being that an inn was obliged to provide accommodation for travellers, whereas a tavern was merely a place where drink was served. Some of these inns became coaching inns in the 17th Century. Oxford later became a great coaching centre and the vehicles were much used until the coming of the railway in 1835.

The Crown was one of these first coaching houses and a place where the many carriers of Oxford left their carts. The present building is where the stables once stood, the much larger inn being on the other side of the passage.

Famous people known to have stayed at the inn, include Shakespeare, who was a friend of the vintner, John Davenant, and is said to have been more friendly to John's wife.
