Whisky & Distilleries

Scotsman with glass of whisky

No one really knows precisely when Scotch whisky distilling began but there are some references to it going back as far as the late 15th century. After many years of development, Scotland is now inextricably linked to and recognised as the home of whisky.

If you’re a visitor to Scotland then don't miss a trip to one of the many whisky distilleries, a large number being in the North East of Scotland. Speyside has one of the best whisky trails, located in the Aberdeen and Grampian region. The combination of spectacular Highland scenery, coastline and attractive villages and towns, and the opportunity to visit some of the best distilleries, including Strathisla, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, is an experience not to be missed. Beyond Speyside you also come across whisky distilling in the Scottish Lowlands, Campbeltown, Islay and the Highland area, and the Islands of Mull, Skye, Arran, Jura and Orkney in the north of the country.

More recently, Wales has seen the return of whisky distillation after an absence of some 100 years. Penderyn, a single malt Welsh whisky, distilled by The Welsh Whisky Company, was  launched on 1st March 2004. All whisky distilled in Wales is single malt. In addition to their single malts, the distillery produces Brecon Dry Gin and Merlyn Cream Liqueur.
