British cheese

Double Gloucester cheese

Cheese has been made in the British Isles for thousands of years, influenced by the early Romans, the Normans in the 11th century and the establishment of various monasteries. By the 17th century, cheese had become a flourishing industry with every region producing its own.

The last 20 years has seen a revolution in the British cheese industry. A new generation of cheesemakers is discovering the art of cheesemaking, reviving the recipes and techniques of their forbears, and producing an enormous range of hand-crafted uniquely flavoured cheeses. Today, over 450 different cheeses are made in Britain by around 220 cheesemakers.

With this revival has come big growth in the number of cheese shops whose cabinets and shelves are crammed with a heavenly mix of cloth covered cheeses, cheese logs rolled in herbs and cheeses washed in Perry, Sloe Gin and cider. You'll also discover pubs and restaurant offering guests special cheese boards often featuring local and regional cheeses. If you're a cheese fan then why not try one of the many food trails featuring cheese in the Heart of EnglandLincolnhshire, North West England, Wales and South West England to name but a few.
