Gastropubs

The Gastropub Cookbook

In 1991 David Eyre and Mike Belben decided to open their own eating place. They didn't have enough money to open a restaurant so they bought a pub in London's Farringdon Road and started a new revolution in food and drink - the gastropub. A non-nonsense food establishment with a clear emphasis on good food. The Eagle was an instant hit. Since then 'gastropubs' as they have come to be known, have opened all over London and throughout Britain.

Relaxed and informal

Today, the British gastropub has developed into another opportunity to experience high-quality dining in relaxed and informal surroundings - infact the perfect place for a quiet lunch at the weekend or a meal out with some friends.

VisitBritain, in conjunction with, Diana Henry, have put together a selection of some of the finest gastro pubs in Britain.

Another bonus, in this section, are delicious recipes from some of the resident gastro pub chefs. We hope you enjoy the food and drink on offer...
