Marianne Barrett Interview & Biography
Originally from Copenhagen, Marianne Barrett is the brains behind a rather interesting home hosted dinner scheme (www.homedinnersinwales.com/) in Wales. The married mum of four lives in Pontcanna, Cardiff. Since 1988, Marianne has made her home dinner scheme a highlight for many guests visiting Wales.
Marianne wants her guests to experience local Welsh culture by inviting them to enjoy a home-cooked meal. It's a great opportunity to learn about other cultures and develop friendships; very often guests and host families keep in touch. See what Adrian from London said about dinning with the Williamses.
Marianne currently has 'hosts' in Cardiff (the Welsh capital), South and North Wales. She can also accept bookings from individuals as well as groups.
What is your most memorable childhood 'food' memory?
Pretty basic food, but I really enjoy them – meat, potatoes and fish. Simple but rather good for you.
What's your favourite food or ingredient 'on your doorstep'?
I am a big fan of pretty much everything Welsh but if you're forcing my hand I would say that I am rather partial to Welsh cheese such as Llanboidy which comes from West Wales.
What is your favourite food secret?
Wild Yeast Bread from my local baker. If you're making any bread at home my personal tip would be to leave it to rise in the fridge for a few days rather than in a warm room.
What food would you travel for (within the UK)?
Well, first of all, if I were to jump in our family car today and hit the road I would like to visit Portmeirion in North Wales. The food up there is always pretty good and I just love that part of the country. Also the Llyn Peninsula.
What is your favourite seasonal food?
Strawberries or raspberries. What can you say other than when they're in season you can't beat them for their simplicity and taste. My recommendation would also be to have them stewed and eat them with a dollop of thick cream.
What is your favourite local food shop?
There is a shop in Cardiff called Pulse where I can pick up lots of good locally sourced food and there's also quite a bit of organic produce.
What is your favourite eating place?
When I have time to eat out I would normally head for Cibo. It's a nice local restaurant and I love the food and atmosphere there. A real friendly crowd.
What is your favourite UK pub?
The Conway just around the corner from us and in Sofia Gardens in Cardiff the Mochyn D.
What is your favourite dish or recipe?
A good fish pie during the winter. My mother-in-law makes one to die for with prawns and a great milk-based sauce to accompany it.
Name an inspirational food person? Why?
My mum, of course. I learnt so many things from her; one was to cook every day. So many people today just don't bother, but I make a point of doing so.
