Glastonbury Tor

Glastonbury Tor

After brunch in one of the healthy organic food cafés, it’s time to climb Glastonbury Tor. The Tor is a teardrop-shaped hill  jutting up from the Somerset flatlands. At the top is a lonely roofless tower; St Michael's Tower of the former church. Legend has this hill is the mystical Isle of Avalon – King Arthur’s burial site. At one time, the levels around the Tor were flooded and the Tor would have appeared an Island. The Tor is also said to be the point at which a number of ley lines cross.

Cheddar Gorge

Cheddar Gorge

You should be getting hungry now, but don’t head back into Glastonbury. Drive north to Cheddar to sample some of THE most delicious cheese in the world (we aren’t exaggerating!). As you drive into Cheddar Gorge - the largest gorge in Britain - you’ll be shocked how the sides just seems to shoot up hundreds of feet around you. Before leaving make sure you stop in the village for a famous English Cream Tea (homemade sultana scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam).

Wookey Hole Caves

Just south of Cheddar Gorge are Britain’s most spectacular underground caves and rivers. You can take a guided tour deep into the caverns with encrusted walls and filled with stalagmites and stalactites. Archaeological finds show man has lived in the caves for 50,000 years! The bones of tropical and Ice Age animals have been found there. It’s said that the caves were once inhabited by an evil witch who had to be exorcised by the Abbot of Glastonbury, and you can still see her remains there today!
