On the water

Cowes Week, Isle of Wight

Sailing adventures

For a seafaring adventure, head to the south coast and the Channel Islands. Be a millionaire for a day – explore the harbours and creeks in a cruise boat, or if you’re a speed freak how about a powerboat ride? The largest and most prestigious international sailing regatta in the world takes place every August in the Solent waters off the Isle of Wight. Each day of Cowes Week (www.skandiacowesweek.co.uk/web/code/php/main.php?section=home) around 1,000 boats and 8,000 sailors take to the sea.

Lakes, lochs & waterways

Britain's unique network of inland waterways is a special world waiting to be explored. Built more than 2 centuries ago as one of the engines of the industrial revolution, these 2,000 miles of canals and navigable rivers thread through countryside and towns. Get all hands on deck and hire a fully-equipped canal boat for the week, or for a short break. There are also many trip boats and cruising restaurants taking visitors on cruises into the countryside. For more information, visit Waterscape (www.waterscape.com/).

Ramsey Island

Sealife excursions

Britain’s waters are rich in wildlife and if you head to Ramsey Island in Pembrokeshire, Wales, you can see the grey seal's favourite breeding ground. Scotland also offers areas of outstanding natural beauty that have an abundance of wildlife. The waters of the west coast support about 20 species of whale, including humpback and sperm. There have even been sightings of the mighty orca (killer whale). Alternatively, if you want to see the rare otter, head for the Isle of Skye where an observation hide means you can view them without scaring them away.
