Warrington Museum & Art Gallery

In Warrington, take a socio-historical journey at the local Warrington Museum and Art Gallery (museum.warrington.gov.uk/). Founded in 1848, the museum's collections have grown into some 200,000 objects covering natural sciences, antiquities, social history, numismatics, ethnology, fine and decorative arts and an extensive local photographic archive.

Liverpool: European Capital of Culture 2008

Head west towards Liverpool, European Capital of Culture in 2008, and explore the Wirral Museum (www.wirral.gov.uk/ed/wirral_museum.htm). Over the decades this spectacularly refurbished Victorian town hall has developed into a wonderful local history museum and archive centre. And it’s located in a rather stunning Georgian square as well.

Beatrix Potter country

Then take the road up to the stunning English Lake District. Visit Hawkeshead, near Ambleside, and roam around the Beatrix Potter Gallery (www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-beatrixpottergallery/) which houses the largest collection of Beatrix Potter’s published works, including illustrations, manuscripts and artefacts relating to her life. A new film about Beatrix Potter’s life will be released in the near future starring Rene Zellweger and Ewan MacGregor.
