Something for everyone

Yorkshire is a region that has something for everyone. The history and culture for those who want to explore the past, its museums and galleries, vibrant cities and towns with fantastic local food waiting to be tasted and for those who want to get out and about miles of countryside at its best.

York Castle Museum, York

York’s top cultural attractions

York Art Gallery (www.yorkartgallery.org.uk/) in the historic city of York offers you the opportunity to enjoy 7 centuries of European paintings as you take a grand tour of this fine artwork. It also acts as a home for some outstanding collection of pioneer studio pottery. While you’re in this remarkable city check out the Castle Museum (www.yorkcastlemuseum.org.uk/), Jorvik (www.vikingjorvik.com/), York Minster Undercroft Treasury and Crypt (www.yorkminster.org/audio.shtml) and the Impressions Gallery of Photography (www.impressions-gallery.com/) to name but a few.

Ripon Prison & Courthouse

You’ll find a number of fascinating museums in Ripon, the town that inspired Lewis Carol to write Alice in Wonderland. Visit the Liberty Ripon Courthouse Museum (www.ripon.co.uk/museums/) where you can examine how justice was served in 17th-century Britain, and the Ripon Prison and Police Museum (www.riponmuseums.co.uk/html/prison.html) where you can see items such as a pair of stocks, a whipping post and a Police Box similar to Dr. Who's Tardis.

Bronte Parsonage

Bronte Parsonage Museum

For some literary inspiration head for Howarth on the edge of the desolate and dramatic moors. Here you’ll find the Bronte Parsonage Museum (www.bronte.info). Imagine the everyday lives of the Bronte sisters as you walk round Haworth Church and the Bronte Parsonage. Marvel at their tiny manuscripts, admire Charlotte’s wedding bonnet and imagine sharing a moment with the sisters in their short but creative lives.
