Britain’s regional museums & galleries – Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has an abundance of museums and galleries along with heritage centres and historical tours for everyone to enjoy. Belfast’s famous Ulster Museum (www.ulstermuseum.org.uk/), located in the city’s Botanic Gardens, houses rich collections of archaeology, local history, art and natural sciences. Don’t miss a special exhibition about the 19th and 20th-century artist Sir John Lavery who donated much of his life’s work to the museum.

St Patrick Centre

The Saint Patrick Centre (www.visitdownpatrick.com/saintpatrickcentre.htm) in Downpatrick, County Down, is an opportunity to learn the fascinating story of Ireland’s patron saint, St Patrick. Reputedly built on the burial site of this famous saint, the centre offers a stimulating exhibition retold in St Patrick’s own words.

After exploring this great institution, you might want to take a trip to one of its partner museums including the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum (www.uftm.org.uk/), voted Irish Museum of the Year, and the Ulster American Folk Park (www.folkpark.com/), an open-air museum in County Tyrone that tells the story of emigration from Ulster to America in the 18th and 19th centuries and provides visitors with a ‘living history’.
