Britain’s top cities for museums & galleries – Cardiff
Cardiff’s museums & galleries
Cardiff is a city brimming with great confidence, superbly mixing modernity with history. A great capital, yet contained enough to retain a friendly and local feel.
Europe’s youngest capital
Cardiff only became the capital of Wales in 1955, making it Europe’s youngest capital! However, that hasn’t held it back, and today Cardiff is continuing to grab the headlines as it moves forward to build on its reputation and status as one of Europe and Britain’s leading destinations.
Celebrating art, film, music & literature
At the heart of this bustling city are its cultural attractions. Inside the Civic Centre, you’ll find the home to an extensive art collection of Impressionist paintings by Renoir, Monet and Cezanne. If you’re looking for something more contemporary, head to the Chapter Arts Centre (www.chapter.org/) which celebrates the diversity of art combining theatre, art, film, music and literature into one venue.
The Museum of Welsh Life
Continuing on that theme, don’t miss the opportunity to visit Trace (www.tracegallery.org/) and G39 (www.g39.org/) with their equal focus on contemporary art exhibitions, video and sculpture. And, just outside of Cardiff is the Museum of Welsh Life, an outstanding open-air museum showing how we have lived, worked, played and worshipped. Watch out for the regular programme of festivals also taking place at this unique venue.
