Couple outside BALTIC

Great art centres

It’s impossible to miss and even ignore the Baltic (www.balticmill.com/) as it towers over the river Tyne. Not really a gallery or a museum, it’s more of an art factory with vast galleries of contemporary art, from sculptures to sound installations. Also, don’t miss out on other local art galleries including The Laing (www.twmuseums.org.uk/laing/), Hatton (www.ncl.ac.uk/hatton/ ), Shipley (www.twmuseums.org.uk/shipley/ ) and University of Northumbria (online.northumbria.ac.uk/gallery/default.htm) are homes to spectacular paintings, sculptures, displays and special exhibitions running every year.

Discovery Museum

Life in Newcastle since Roman times

For a totally different city experience go to the Discovery Museum (www.twmuseums.org.uk/discovery/) which has recreated Newcastle life from Roman, medieval and Georgian times right through to the 20th century. If you’re in the human race then pop along to the Life Science Centre to learn some startling things about you and your body.

Fascinating museums

The Hancock Museum’s magnificent collections of wildlife and special exhibitions, the People’s Museum of Memorabilia, the Shefton Museum of Greek Art and Archaeology (www.ncl.ac.uk/shefton-museum/) and the Military Vehicle Museum (www.military-museum.org.uk/) are also worth a visit.
