Rediscover the lost world of Moctezuma at the British Museum this autumn with an exhibition exploring the life of the last Aztec emperor.
The exhibition, opening on 24th September, will examine Moctezuma's life and legacy through rare objects seen for the very first time in the UK. Masterpieces of Aztec culture on show will include the impressive stone monument known as the Teocalli of Sacred Warfare, amongst other works commissioned by Moctezuma himself.
Moctezuma was regarded as a semi-divine figure and ruled over an empire that stretched from the shores of the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico. You'll learn about Aztec religion, the conquest by the Spanish and the mysterious death of Moctezuma and the collapse of his empire.
Don't miss the exquisite turquoise mask and gold items that demonstrate the consummate skill of the 16th-century Aztec craftsmen.
Launching the exhibition British Museum Director, Neil MacGregor said: "The artistic achievements of the Aztecs astonished the Spanish and the rest of the world, and have continued to wield a huge influence on Mexican art."
