Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition

Gladstone, artwork by Danny Rolph

The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London runs until 16 August and displays new artworks by famous and emerging artists in a range of media including painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture and architecture.

The theme of the exhibition this year is ‘making space’ and artists exhibiting include Anthony Gormley, Damien Hirst and Cy Twombly. The annual Summer Exhibition has become the world’s largest open-submission contemporary art exhibition and always challenges with exciting and innovative art.

Each year over 10,000 works of art are submitted with the majority available to buy. So if you’re a serious collector or thinking of starting buying art, it’s a great show to see what’s out there and how much it costs!

This year, highlights include a gallery of film curated by Richard Wilson and Triton III, a powerful stainless steel sculpture by Bryan Kneale. A room dedicated to architecture showcases pieces by Zaha Hadid, Eric Parry and Norman Foster.

The Royal Academy is one of London’s top galleries and has a fantastic permanent collection of paintings ranging from the 18th century to the present day. Find out more about seeing art in Britain on our museums and galleries pages.
