Tate Liverpool 20th birthday celebrations
This month, Tate Liverpool celebrates its 20th birthday in style - bringing together old friends and new ones, music, song and dance to celebrate the past, present and future of the gallery. The gallery will be buzzing with birthday activities from Saturday 3 - Monday 5 May.
Liverpool is famous for its sense of humour, and on the Laugh Tate Liverpool Collection Tours, you'll see well known comedians, actors, musicians and presenters from the city introducing a selection of their favourite works from the collection.
The birthday celebrations will also allow you to meet some of the Tate's artists. At the Tate Liverpool Artists Masterclasses, Artists from the Tate collection will talk about their experiences of the gallery and the role it played in their artistic careers. These masterclasses are also a chance to see the artists in action in an open demonstration of their working processes, and perhaps even give it a try yourself!
On Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May, there's a special birthday photography treasure hunt around the docks and city centre and selected photographs will be exhibited at a special city centre venue.
There are some special treats at the gallery if you love music, too. On Saturday 3 May the Sense of Sound choirs fill the interior of Tate Liverpool and the Albert Dock with interactive birthday tunes with a modern twist. And in the evening, the gallery holds its very own Northern Soul Dance. 'Long After Tonight', a film by artist Matt Stokes of a Northern Soul reunion, plays in the background while you revisit the Northern Soul dance halls of the 1970s.
There's also a lot for families to do at Tate Liverpool's birthday celebrations. Throughout the birthday weekend, you can join artist Graham Marsden and the Tate family team as they turn the Ground floor gallery space into a maze of dens. And on Saturday 3 May you and your family can create colourful floating lanterns for an evening parade around the Albert Dock.
