2009’s Gower Festival is taking place from 18th to 31st July. This annual celebration of classical music on the Gower Peninsula, the first area of the UK to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is renowned for fantastic music set against a stunning backdrop.
Every year for two weeks the Gower Festival brings the very best in music to this peaceful and picturesque area of countryside. Concerts are held in the numerous and charming churches that dot the area. Most of the concerts are small and intimate - performances by soloists, quartets and trios, but there are larger concerts in the bigger churches featuring choral works.
This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Mendelssohn and the 200th anniversary of the death of Haydn and works from both composers will feature prominently in the concerts. International musicians and performers from all over the world take part and there is an emphasis on showcasing young talent.
