Britain’s beaches

Britain has around 8,000 miles of coastline, and thousands of beaches. To make sure you find one of our very best beaches, look out for Blue Flag beaches. Blue Flag is a prestigious, international award scheme which awards beaches with the highest quality of water, safety, facilities, environmental education and management in England.

Here are a few of our favourite British beaches:

Holkham Bay

Holkham Bay

Holkham Bay, Norfolk

The golden sands of Holkham Bay stretch for 10 miles, so whether you’re looking for solitude or a great family day out, it’s the perfect beach for you. Holkham Bay is also great for nature and wildlife lovers – the bay is part of a coastal nature reserve, and the sand dunes, saltflats and pine woods are inhabited by a wide variety of bird and wildlife.

Bournemouth Beach

Bournemouth

Bournemouth, Dorset

The award-winning Bournemouth boasts 7 miles of golden sands and clear blue water, making it perfect for families. Alum Chine beach along this stretch has a ‘Treasure Island’ themed kids’ play area, and right along the sands of Bournemouth, you’ll find safe bathing areas, kidzones, bouncy castles, entertainers and pedalo hire. Bournemouth is fully accessible, and there are beach wheelchairs available to make it easier to cross the sand.

Nairn Beach

Nairn Central Beach

Nairn Central Beach, Scotland

You’ll find this sandy, accessible beach in the Highlands of Scotland, near the small town of Nairn. The beach has beautiful views across the Moray Firth to the Black Isles, and has been a Seaside Award winner for 14 years. What makes Nairn Central even more special, is the resident school of dolphins that live along the coastline.

Benllech Beach

Benllech Beach

Benllech Beach, Wales

Take one look at the long stretch of golden sand on Benllech Beach and you'll see why this beach is award winning. The coast is a listed Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there are shops, cafés and a picnic area so you and your family can make the best of your day at this beautiful beach.
