Paralympic World Cup 2008

Paralympic World Cup

This month the Paralympic World Cup comes to Manchester for the 4th year running. From 7 – 11 May, hundreds of the world’s best Paralympic athletes from all over the world will compete at three of the city’s best sporting venues.

The Paralympic World Cup is one of the biggest multi-sport competitions for elite athletes with a disability outside the Paralympic Games. It’s also the only major international competition before the 2008 Beijing Paralympics for British competitors.

The Paralympic World Cup is hosted by the British Paralympic Association. It is sanctioned by the IPC and IWBF, and supported by UK Sport, Manchester City Council and the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA).

The competition was created in 2005 to provide an annual world-class multi-sport disability event, to give elite athletes more opportunity to compete with their international counterparts in between the 4-yearly Paralympic Games and showcase elite disability sport around the world.

This year’s Paralympic World Cup will once again showcase athletics, swimming, track cycling and wheelchair basketball. Last year, 340 of the world’s best Paralympic athletes from 47 countries competed for 143 medals in these 4 sports. The athletics and wheelchair basketball games will take place at the Manchester Regional Arena; Manchester Aquatics Centre will host the swimming races; and the Manchester Velodrome will be the track cycling venue.
