Courses to play
Britain has literally hundreds of golf courses on every type of terrain - moorland, parkland, heathland and costal areas - suitable for every handicap. So whether you've had years of experience or have just recently taken up golf, there's the perfect course for you in Britain.
A few of Britain's most famous courses offer bookings to the public, but they're often fully booked months in advance, so it's best to book early. The world-famous St Andrews offers bookings on its New Course as well as its Jubilee and Eden courses. However, during St Andrews Golf Week (www.prestwickgc.co.uk/) you're given the opportunity to play on the legendary Old Course. You'll enjoy a week of golfing competitions for all levels of ability, as well as the finest tuition St Andrews has to offer with a series of golfing dinners at the club.
Hever Castle Golf Club (www.hever.co.uk/intro.html) in Kent is home to one of the longest holes in Europe and plays host to the Kent Professional Golfer's Association (PGA) Championship. Prices start at just £27 to play on the 18 hole Kings and Queens course.
The Royal County Down (www.royalcountydown.org/) club in Newcastle, Northern Ireland, is another great place to play. One of the oldest clubs in Ireland, it offers its Championship links and its second course, the Annesley links, which is considerably cheaper. Both courses offer a stunning view of the Mourne Mountains, making it an unforgettable experience.
Many of Britain's golf clubs offer one-off visitor fees, but if you enjoy a particular club or course, you can apply to become a member. Most clubs also have a strict dress code, so make sure you check this before you arrive at the club.
