Belsay Hall, Belsay, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland
Belsay Hall is the starting point of your tour. Close to
Newcastle upon Tyne, Belsay Hall has some fantastic gardens. There are formal terraces, flower gardens, a croquet lawn and massed rhododendrons. A woodland walk leads to a wildly romantic garden created from inside the quarry from whose stone the house was built.
Cragside, Rothbury, Morpeth, Northumberland
From Belsay travel north to the Cragside Estate, 16 miles north of Morpeth, the county town of Northumberland. One of the first houses ever to be powered by electricity, Cragside is a grand Victorian house perched above a wooded gorge. There are rock gardens and also a terraced garden whose unusual features include an orchard house with rotating fruit pots.
