Newby Hall and Gardens, Ripon, North Yorkshire

The first stop on your Yorkshire garden itinerary is the restored Robert Adam Newby Hall, whose gardens retain many of their 18th century features, including a superb hedged walk marked by Venetian statuary. The gardens include wide lawns with double herbaceous borders. Elsewhere are formal compartmented gardens including a tropical garden and stepped water garden.

Ripley Castle, Ripley, Harrogate, North Yorkshire

Ripley Castle stands in an 18th century 'Capability' Brown landscape, with lakes, trees, temple and a deer park. Restored formal walled gardens surround the castle with huge herbaceous borders - among the best in England. The castle also boasts an 18th century orangery, greenhouses with tropical plant collections, rare vegetables and a national collection of hyacinths.
