Alston in the Pennine Hills

Alston

The next stop on your trail is Alston, the highest market town in England at around 1000 metres above sea level. At the beginning of the 20th century, Alston was a well-known lead mining town, and the steep cobbled streets, market cross and old-fashioned shop fronts are all characteristics of that time.

The Bowhill mansion, country park and estate dates from the early part of the 19th century. The house contains a wealth of antique French furniture.

Greenhead

The next town on the Pennine Way is Greenhead. The town sits in the valley of the Tipalt Burn in the shadow of the Walltown Craggs section of Hadrian's Wall. The Roman Army Museum is only half a mile's walk from the village centre, and the ruins of the 14th century Thirlwall Castle are nearby.

Kirk Yetholm

The village of Kirk Yetholm marks the end of the Pennine Way National Trail (www.nationaltrail.co.uk/PennineWay/). The village lies in Scotland, but is only around a mile away from the English border. The official end of the trail is at the Border Hotel, where you can (at last) sit down and take a well-deserved rest.
