If you want a fun day out in Britain, don't miss the Bognor Birdman competition - where else can you see Mary Poppins, a giant Frisbee, a flying Sumo, a giant human bat, lemmings, penguins and Snow White jump off a ledge high above the sea in an attempt to fly? The Bognor Birdman is definitely one of Britain's strangest competitions, and this year it's happening on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July.

The competition happens every year at the traditional seaside town of Bognor Regis, where people from all over the world dress up and run off the pier with their unique human-powered 'flying machines' in an attempt to fly the furthest distance.

The competition started in 1971 in the small town of Selsey - it was called the International Bird-man Rally, but later moved to Bognor Regis. Originally, Birdman was a local competition, but news of the strange event soon spread and now people come to Bognor Regis from all over the world to try and claim the Birdman title.

The prize for 'flying' over 100m is £30,000, but no one in Birdman history has reached 100m - the record is 89.2m, held by Briton Dave Bradshaw. Most flyers compete to raise money for charity, dressing up as giant bugs, aliens, cows, toilets, and sometimes not even dressing at all - in 1974 a naked man called John tried his best, but not surprisingly, didn't get very far.

So if you're planning a trip to Britain in July, why not enter the International Bognor Birdman and try your hand at flying? You never know, you might just scoop the £30,000 prize! Good luck!
