Britain's favourite pantos

Plots are usually based on traditional children's stories or folk tales, and sometimes combine elements from different tales. Here are some of our favourites:

  • Cinderella - the most popular of all pantomimes features a beautiful young girl mistreated by her ugly step-sisters, who goes on win the heart of Prince Charming.

  • Aladdin - tells the story of a boy who discovers a genie in a lamp and is granted 3 wishes. (Sometimes combined with Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves).

  • Dick Whittington - based on a 17th-century play where young Dick seeks his fortune in London where he has been told, 'The streets are paved with gold'.

  • Jack and the Beanstalk - 'Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman' are fearful words uttered by a giant that lives at the top of an enormous beanstalk.

  • Mother Goose - tells the story of a poor old woman who comes by a magic goose that lays golden eggs.

  • Puss in Boots - features as a well-spoken boot-wearing cat who helps his poor master (a miller's son) find riches and marry a princess.

  • Sleeping Beauty - the classic story of a beautiful princess who, under the spell of an evil witch, sleeps for years and can only be awoken by a prince's kiss.

  • Snow White - tells of a young girl so beautiful that her evil, jealous step-mother tries to kill her. 7 kindly dwarves take her in, and she is eventually saved by a handsome prince.
