Gay Newcastle

Nightlife

The people of the North East know how to have a good time and there are a huge range of bars, clubs, theatre and comedy on offer in Newcastle Gateshead's compact city centre.

Camp David

Gay

Newcastle's growing gay scene rivals anything you'll find elsewhere in the country.

The gay village, or pink triangle as it is sometimes known, is situated in the west of Newcastle city centre and a five minute walk from Newcastle Central Station. It offers a wild and friendly night with a legendary north east charm.

There's no shortage of pubs to choose from. Favourite bars include The Dog, a small classy looking pub, The Eagle with its ranch-like feel attracts those with a fondness for leather, demin and uniforms. Twist is a lively pub, while the Baron and Baroness, is a new bar with interesting gothic decor. Rockies is well-established with a party atmosphere and plenty of DJs and Zinc is a modern pub set over two levels and has its own resident DJ.

Camp David (www.campdavidbar.co.uk/) is the newest bar on the pink circuit and actively encourages a mixed crowd. This stylish bar covers two floors and has a distinct late 60s retro cool feel.

Or if you're clubbing try The Yard or the Powerhouse, one of the only exclusive gay clubs in the North East. It's set over two floors and whether you like disco, cheese or frothy house, it's a complete hoot!

The city has a well-established Pride on the Tyne (www.pride-on-tyne.com/) (every July), which remains free and accessible to everyone.

Straight

On the Quayside, on both sides of the river Tyne, you'll find a plethora of clubs, restaurants and some of the best pubs Newcastle Gateshead has to offer, as well as stunning views of the famous bridges.

The Central Station area of Newcastle Gateshead is close to the gay quarter and hosts some of the most recent additions to the pub circuit with something for everyone from the traditional pub to the swish café car.

In recent years, the Newcastle suburb of Jesmond has witnessed many new bars springing up as the student population mingle with the hip crowd.

Theatre and Entertainment

Newcastle Gateshead is buzzing with live entertainment.

Live Theatre (www.live.org.uk/) on Newcastle's quayside holds a monthly cabaret for lesbians, gay men and their mates with live bands, DJs and anything else the organisers can think of to entertain the punters. Always amazes and delights in equal measure.

The Sage (www.thesagegateshead.org/) is a beautiful, new glass and steel building and a truly fantastic music venue featuring everything from jazz and classical to world and folk.

Newcastle Gateshead has its own Jazz Café, the Hyena Café (home to the best in stand up comedy) and the wonderfully restored Victorian Opera House. The Head of Steam and The Telegraph pub (on Orchard Street) are both hip and happening places with great bands.

The Theatre Royal (www.theatreroyal.co.uk/) is the region's principal theatre, featuring major national and international productions of opera, ballet, West End hits and contemporary work are all staged in this delightful Grade I listed Edwardian theatre.
