Spitalfields & Brick Lane Tour
London's Eastside can symbolise extreme sophistication with places like Canary Wharf and at the same time can signify extreme indigence and lawlessness. It is the latter side we uncover in this section.
Start your tour at Liverpool Street Station.
At the foot of the stairs from the Liverpool Street entrance is where Tom Cruise meets up with Jon Voight in Mission: Impossible, although where the telephones once stood is a row of cash machines. Attached to the station is The Great Eastern Hotel where Bill Murray finds himself perched on a ledge in The Man Who Knew Too Little. Across the street is Liverpool Street Underground Station above which is the safe house where Tom Cruise holes up with Jean Reno in Mission: Impossible.
Turn left onto Bishopsgate and then right into Brushfield , home of popular Spitalfields Market.
Nearby Christ Church features in 28 Days Later - its where Jim discovers a sea of dead (and not-so-dead) bodies before being attacked by the infected priest. A recreation of the church looms over the Victorian East End seen in the Hughes brothers' From Hell with Johnny Depp on the trail of Jack the Ripper, alongside a recreation of the Ten Bells pub (on the corner of Fournier Street), where the prostitutes congregate.
Pool of London Tour
Start at Park Street just behind Borough Market. This is home to two famous houses from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels: No. 15 is the gang's hideout and No. 13 is Dog's Place. It is unmistakable!
Nearby Stoney Street appears in Harry Potter - The Prisoner of Azkaban. The public house, 'The Market Porter', is transformed into the 'Third Hand Book Emporium', No 7. Stoney Street becomes 'The Leaky Cauldron' and the triple decker Knight Bus trundles down the street.
Borough Market and nearby public house 'The Globe' star in Bridget Jones's Diary. Bridget's flat is above the pub and everyone will remember the scene where Bridget plods glumly through the market in her Bunny Girl outfit after discovering Daniel with Lara.
Cross Borough High Street and walk along Tooley Street before turning left into Hay's Galleria. On the other side of Hay's Galleria is a scenic river walk to Tower Bridge. Tower Bridge also provided a constant backdrop to Bridget's ever-changing moods.
