Police stops

The police can stop you at any time, and failing to stop is a criminal offence. If you're stopped by the police while driving, you may have to provide your drivers' license, insurance certificate and vehicle registration documents.

If the police want to stop your vehicle, they'll try to attract your attention by:

  • Flashing the blue lights or headlights of the police car
  • Sounding their siren or horn
  • Directing you to pull over to the side by pointing or flashing the left indicator of the police car

You must stop or pull over as soon as it is safe to do so, then switch off your engine and wait for a police officer to come to you.
